SAU 67 is committed to providing students with disabilities equal access to educational opportunities by aligning our policies and practices with The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504).
Title II of the ADA and Section 504 prohibit the same thing--discrimination solely on the basis of disability.
504 Plans are accommodation plans developed by a group of people knowledgeable about the student's educational needs with regard to how their respective disability impacts their ability to access educational opportunity. These plans are developed at the building level and often through the school counseling department.
Once the team has determined there is enough information to make a disability determination they will do so using all available information. If the student is found to have a disability, the team will decide whether the student needs any special or related services in order to meet educational needs as adequately as those students without disabilities. It is possible for students to be found as having a disability without needing a support plan. Should that happen, the student remains protected against discrimination as a person with a disability. 504 plans are reviewed periodically as warranted.
