About

Success in a 21st century classroom requires the use and integration of a variety of technology tools by both students and staff.

The integration of a variety of technology tools by both students and staff is a requirement to prepare our students for their future. Currently, our students are using technology to create and publish their work, as well as collaborate and communicate with others.

Providing students with Google Apps for Education accounts and a Chromebook to use at school and home is another step towards achieving a vision for a 21st century classroom that facilitate learning anywhere and anytime and fosters equitable access for all students.

MISSION AND VISION

The mission of the Bow School District is to provide an adaptive and challenging learning environment that meets the needs of students in an emerging global community, and prepares them for excellence in education and the workplace, while cultivating integrity, responsibility, digital citizenship and a sustained passion for continued learning.

Success in a 21st century classroom requires the use and integration of a variety of technology tools by both students and staff.

Students are expected to use technology to create and publish their work, as well as collaborate and communicate with others.

All educational technology initiatives must be “driven by instruction and powered by technology.”

GOALS

To make certain that Bow students are prepared for success in school, post-secondary education, career, and life in a globally connected society, it is crucial that the goals of the district’s Google Apps for Education and 1:1 Chromebook initiatives are consistent with state and national standards, such as the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (ISTE Standards S), Next Generation Science Standards, and the Common Core State Standards. Furthermore, it is important that the goals of these initiatives are connected to the Bow School District Strategic Plan.

As part of the Google Apps for Education and 1:1 Chromebook initiatives, students will:

  • Participate in a variety of opportunities to demonstrate the relevance and interconnectedness of their knowledge and skills.
  • Use technology tools to communicate, collaborate, create and publish their work.
  • Engage in increasingly personalized and student-centered learning environments.
  • Demonstrate and model the attitudes and attributes of a responsible digital and global citizen.

FAQS on Chromebooks

Why did the districts buy Chromebooks instead of laptops or iPads?

Chromebooks are inexpensive, easy to use, easy to manage. Laptops and iPads are expensive and very difficult to manage . Read more about the choice of Chromebooks and Google Apps here.

    Who is issued a Chromebook?

Students, Most Administrators, and Professional Staff. Support staff are not issued Chromebooks.

What happens if the Chromebook is damaged or breaks during the course of the school year?

It depends on how the damage occurred. Regular wear and tear or failed components are repaired in-house at no cost. However, damage which appears to have occurred as a result of student neglect or abuse are repaired in-house at a cost of $50 per incident per our Chromebook handbook.

Can a student bring use his/her own laptop instead of participating in the Take Home Chromebook program?

Absolutely. So long as the student brings in his/her laptop everyday and it is fully charged, they are welcome to use it instead of a Chromebook. If the laptop has the Chrome browser installed, they should be able to do everything with their laptop that the other students are doing with their Chromebooks. However, please be aware that while our school IT staffs are prepared to service the district-owned Chromebooks, they will not be able to service a student's personal laptop. Furthermore, a district provided Chromebook will be required for some activities such as standardized and secure testing and some applications. Students should still maintain their school issued Chromebook.

Can only use a Chromebook when it is connected to the internet. Is that true?

Yes and No. Most of the things we do these days are online, so even a tablet or Windows computer needs a network connection. However, a lot of things can be done on a Chromebook even when offline. This is great for backup plans when the network is down. To learn how to enable offline use of Drive/Docs click here.

What if I am leaving the district (new job, retiring, graduated)? What happens to my Google account and files?

Your account will be deleted after a certain amount of time. You can copy all of your data to a personal Google account. Click here for the steps to complete this process.

    Can Chromebooks Print?

Yes, however this feature is not available to students. Instead students may send appropriate files to print to a teacher or staff member. If the teacher or staff member sees fit, they will print the file.
